Alisa Nowak’s Excon is a flexible six-weight sans serif font family that pays tribute to the legendary French designer Roger Excoffon (1910–1983). Its top-heavy letters revisit an uncommon concept in type design that Excoffon explored decades ago, later picked up by a few Dutch designers. Drawing inspiration from French sans serifs of the 1950s and 60s, Excon works beautifully for corporate identity and editorial projects. The letters feature subtle stroke contrast – essential for showing off their top-heaviness – and mid-20th-century touches like pairing a double-storey ‘a’ with a single-storey ‘g’. In the Thin weight, contrast is minimal, but in the Black weight it’s bold and distinctive. The lowercase sports a tall x-height with ascenders taller than the capitals, while the numerals are proportionally spaced and match the height of the caps.
